A Look at the Film, "When the Game Stands Tall"

Though in previews it may appear to be simply just another sports film, the faith-friendly movie When the Game Stands Tall's central theme is not really football. Inspired by true events, the movie depicts the story of the amazing, record-breaking winning streak of the De La Salle High School football team--151 straight wins over the course of 12 years! But the story's central thread is the unwavering commitment from their visionary coach, Bob Ladouceur, portrayed by Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, "Person of Interest").

"Coach Lad" pushes his team hard during training, rehearses plays and views tapes, but his main focus is not the win. His life's calling, perhaps because of his personal faith in God, is to develop these young players into people of character. He does all that he can to teach them about faith, integrity and strength in the face of adversity. Caviezel told sportingnews.com,“Winning is a byproduct of character,” Caviezel said. “Wooden. Lombardi. Ladouceur. Petersen. They focus on the character of a person first.”
