Bill Gaither recently had the pleasure to meet up with David Young before a Gaither Vocal Band concert in Gainesville, Georgia. Young, often known professionally as “Little David Young,” has enjoyed a long career in gospel music — playing piano, writing songs, directing and teaching music, running a recording studio and singing with many popular groups. He toured with the Couriers in the mid ’60s, but being newly married, he felt the Lord’s prompting to stop traveling full-time, settle down and raise a family. He filled in for various groups, subbing on tenor for the Florida Boys, on piano for the Dixie Echoes and the States men and even subbing for Vestal with the Happy Goodmans! Young was inducted into Atlanta’s Country Music Hall of Fame, was added to the Gospel Roll of Honor in 2004 and received the Living Legend Award at 2012’s Grand Ole Gospel Reunion. He is still performing onstage with his wife Colleen, with whom he lives happily in Georgia. Their musical legacy is being carried on by his five children, all fine singers and writers, as well as some of his 17 grandchildren.
