Gaither Homecoming friend Bob Johnson went to be with the Lord on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, in North Carolina. His health had declined following a stroke he suffered in July. He was a beloved member of the Homecoming family, along with his wife Jeanne.
Bob and Jeanne spent many years performing together in countless venues and churches, as well as on television. They met while Jeanne was singing with the Gethsemane Quartet in Greensboro, North Carolina, began singing together while they were still dating, and were married on December 20th of that same year, 1959. After singing together with the Gethsemane Quartet for about five years, Bob and Jeanne took time off to give birth to their only child, Sonja.
In the summer of 1967, the Johnsons received a call from the famous Speer Family of Nashville, Tennessee, and in September answered the call and moved to Nashville, where they lived for the next eight and a half years. Then, in 1976 the couple moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and soon became active in Christian television. They appeared on many stations across the country and at one time hosted their own program "Signature," which aired on the Inspiration Network and other independent stations. Bob and Jeanne also became beloved members of the Homecoming family, appearing in numerous Gaither Homecoming videos and concerts. The Johnsons won multiple Dove Awards for their musical excellence, but more importantly, blessed countless numbers of people through their ministry.
An outpouring of online support began as friends and family reacted to the sad news:
The Johnsons' son-in-law, Heath Nestor:
My father-in-law, Bob Johnson, walked through the gates of Heaven this morning at 5:24. What a moment that must have been! What a great example of living a Christ-like life he was in every situation. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. He loved all of his girls!
We are amazed and blessed with the outpouring of love and support. I am blessed and thankful to say that we had a house full of friends and ministry partners who came and went all day long! Food was brought in along with a lot of love and fellowship! My family is overwhelmed with everyone that is reaching out. Words cannot express my appreciation for how you have all loved on my family. Bob will truly be missed, but we will rejoice and be glad!
Today was a sad day for me! My sweet friend Bob Johnson went to heaven. Jeanne and Bob and I shared many wonderful times together with the Speers and Gaither videos and our own special times singing together. Bob was one of a kind. He was everyone's helper. And was the ultimate gentleman. Bob, Amos and I loved you and appreciate you and Jeanne. Rest assured as you look down from heaven, we will look after Jeanne. You will be missed.
Sad to hear of the passing of a true gentleman, Bob Johnson. He & Jeanne are a study in grace & class. Heaven's sweeter.
