Although his personal life was tumultuous at times, and he explored many genres of music, the iconic Man in Black always returned to faith, with musical roots planted in the gospel realm. The recently released CD set Bootleg Vol. IV: The Soul Of Truth gives an intimate look at Johnny Cash’s passion for gospel music, presenting three rare albums in their entirety (on two discs): A Believer Sings the Truth; an untitled, unreleased set from 1975; and Johnny Cash Gospel Singer. Among these hard-to-find recordings are 15 previously unreleased tracks, including outtakes from the recording sessions. Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, provides liner notes describing the gospel in uences in his father’s upbringing and the passion he had for performing this music, despite some resistance from his record labels.
