Gene McDonald was filling in for the Oaks’ bass, Richard Sterban, while he was recovering from an Achilles’ tendon injury, and during one concert run, he and and the Oak Ridge Boys had the opportunity to visit 88-year-old George H.W. and Barbara Bush at their home in Houston, Texas. The Oaks and the Bushes have been mutual fans for decades, and previously the Boys called the former president, at Barbara’s request during his extended hospital stay due to complications from bronchitis. President Bush said that hearing a little “Elvira” would cheer him up, so the Boys complied and followed up with “Amazing Grace.” During this recent live visit, Duane Allen said on Facebook, “It was so good to see President Bush and Barbara in their home in Houston. He is getting stronger each day. We went by to visit with them on our way to Galveston. They told us to thank all of you for your prayers, so, thank you.”
