"Risen" Brings An Intriguing View of Jesus' Resurrection

The new historical fiction film Risen may spark curiosity from non-believers as it presents a gripping scenario of what could have transpired immediately following Jesus' death and resurrection.

This is the latest offering from Affirm Films, known more for its popular modern-day faith stories including War Room, Soul Surfer and Courageous. But Nashville-based producer Rich Peluso fell in love with the script for Risen when he first read it nearly a decade ago.

One thing he liked was that the story is told from the point of view of an outsider, a non-believer. High-ranking Roman military tribune Clavius (played by Joseph Fiennes) is a hardened soldier, having served 25 years in the army. He is tasked with investigating the mystery of the disappearance of Jesus' body following the crucifixion. Accompanied by his trusted aide, Lucius (Tom Felton), Clavius sets out to disprove rumors of a risen Messiah.

But as he looks for clues, he becomes more and more uncertain of his own beliefs. Instead of finding a lifeless body, he encounters a truth he never expected, forcing him to re-examine his entire worldview.

Though Risen is biblically-inspired fiction, the compelling story reminds viewers that once we encounter Jesus, everything changes.
